SCATTER

In the car, sitting at the light - red
Out the window, side of the road
Solid wall of ever-greenery
Sweeping with the breeze
As though lurking behind
Fairies push and pull the tender branches

Green - go, leave the fairy world behind
Don't think, feel
The secret of what you are
Who you've been
Addressed to the impersonal you
Meant for the personal I

Mourn the one I might have been
Accept the one I am - not yet ...

Speaking of Words

I spent five days last week studying accents
Learning phonetics, syllables and vowels
Putting them together in ways foreign to my tongue
My mind, my way of thinking, my being

At days' end I was the same person
With different placements of the tongue
Taking the words and twisting them
Into strange representations

They meant the same, still
They seemed different in the speaking
As they eased their way into consciousness
Beautiful and vibrant in their foreignness
