Cold
It is so cold in these rooms
Down on the ground floor
Beneath the rotting deck
Beside the pool
It is the cold of wintery
Indifference, resignation, apathy
Restless whimperings of a frozen soul
Without direction or purpose
The sun holds off its heat
Though its light shines dimly
Behind the shadows
Of the trees across the creek
And so I drink to the warmth
Of the coming spring, the new year
The extended light of day
And an awakening heart.
