Reduced by One

As two, we slept
Peacefully

In long deep sighs
We spoke

In bursts of laughter
And tears

We built our lives
Together

We sang and hummed -
Silly tunes

Your skin and mine
Bound tight against each other

Your soul hiding in your eyes
Begging to be found

My soul begging to be lost
In yours

Ourselves colliding in kaleidoscopic
Bursts of color and pattern

As the tendrils of the ivy vine
Wind around the tree

So your legs encircled mine
And held me - surrendered

In sweet morning light
Our breath the sound of love

Now laughter haunts the empty room
Ourselves reduced by one
